Detailed Information

Here is South Essex College’s response to our Freedom of Information request:

Q: Does your HE establishment have a policy on the use of fur?

A: Currently we have no official policy relating to the use of fur on the BA Hons Fashion Design course at South Essex College.

Q: Does real fur feature in any of your fashion or design courses, and if so, in what way?

A: None of the programme units relate or refer to the use of fur although research by students into different forms of natural and manmade fabrics and materials might allow them to explore this, however, it is not actively encouraged.

In the past 5 years we have only had one student wanting to use real fur in a garment for her final collection

Q: What financial support, including sponsored competitions do you receive from the fur industry?

A: None – the course team would not endorse the use of real fur via sponsorship

Q: Does your HE establishment allow or facilitate the fur industry to promote design competitions, summer schools, sponsorships, internships, or scholarships?

A: No, none of the above

This university has no clear stance on the use of fur.

Real fur is cruel and unnecessary. Please urge the University to adopt a fur free policy.  Email: Kirsti McLean, Programme Leader – BA Hons Fashion Design, Kirsti.mclean@southessex.ac.uk
