Q: Do you allow stall holders at your markets to sell real fur? (including small items such as knitted hats with fur bobbles, or key rings with fur trims etc.

A: We would ask stall holders to withdraw products if brought to our notice

Although the council agreed to consider our Fur Free Markets scheme, they have since informed us:

it has been decided that for the time being our informal policy of not allowing fur is sufficient.

This is disappointing.  No market can ever be fur free if it has a policy of being reactive rather than proactive.

A:   Our Street Trading Policy does not cover the subject of selling fur, but would be happy to receive examples of wording

A:  We are not aware of any of the stallholders selling fur items.  There are no policies/agreements covering this subject.

Q: Do you allow stall holders at your markets to sell real fur? (including small items such as knitted hats with fur bobbles, or key rings with fur trims etc.

A:  It is permitted although, as far as the Council is aware, it does not happen.

Would be happy to receive a suggested form of words to consider, however due to the nature of the contractual arrangements put in place by the Council even if a decision were made by the Council to include the words in its agreements they could not be included until such time as the market services were reprocured or unless the market providers agreed.

• Haynes Lane Market operated by the Crystal Palace Transition Team.
• Clock Tower Market once a month – Station Road, South Norwood. Operated by local community group.
• Occasional visiting (ie. Continental Food) markets North End, Croydon. Outsourced by Croydon BID to various operators throughout the year

A:  They are not currently included in a list of banned products.

A: Yes, at Swanley Wednesday Market as the sale of real fur is not illegal.   In addition, Sevenoaks Town Council who operate the Sevenoaks Wednesday and Saturday markets on Sevenoaks District Council’s behalf, choose to prohibit the sale of real fur products by stall-holders.

A:  Not specifically excluded from terms of market contract but traders must comply with all relevant legislation.

Q: Do you allow stall holders at your markets to sell real fur? (including small items such as knitted hats with fur bobbles, or key rings with fur trims etc.

A:   No stall holders have been licenced to sell real fur

However, when we asked for clarification:

Could you please clarify, if real fur was found on a trading stall would the trader be required to remove it?  I ask because most real fur found on markets is as trims e.g. the pom pom on a knitted hat.  The trader would list knitted hats or accessories on their application, not knitted hat with real fur trim.
