Q: Do you allow stall holders at your markets to sell real fur? (including small items such as knitted hats with fur bobbles, or key rings with fur trims etc.

A:  We do not have legislation regarding fur. We do not have any traders who sell fur. We would be willing to look at your documentation.

The Council allows the sale of fur. They have asked to see our Fur Free Markets policy to consider.

Southampton City Council has the following markets: City Centre weekly market, Bitterne Weekly market, Christmas Festival

Here is the Council’s response to our Freedom of Information request:

Q: Do you allow stall holders at your markets to sell real fur? (including small items such as knitted hats with fur bobbles, or key rings with fur trims etc.

A:  It is permitted although, as far as the Council is aware, it does not happen.

Would be happy to receive a suggested form of words to consider, however due to the nature of the contractual arrangements put in place by the Council even if a decision were made by the Council to include the words in its agreements they could not be included until such time as the market services were reprocured or unless the market providers agreed.

Q: Do you allow stall holders at your markets to sell real fur? (including small items such as knitted hats with fur bobbles, or key rings with fur trims etc.

A: We would ask stall holders to withdraw products if brought to our notice

Although the council agreed to consider our Fur Free Markets scheme, they have since informed us:

it has been decided that for the time being our informal policy of not allowing fur is sufficient.

This is disappointing.  No market can ever be fur free if it has a policy of being reactive rather than proactive.

Oadby and Wigston Borough Council has the following markets: Supersonic Boom Annual Youth Festival

Q: Do you allow stall holders at your markets to sell real fur? (including small items such as knitted hats with fur bobbles, or key rings with fur trims etc.

A:  Before a stall is booked to attend Supersonic Boom the nature, purpose and business of the stall is assessed regarding suitability, and I do not feel that a stall selling real fur items would be permitted to attend.

However they could not provide any evidence that they would know if fur was included in a vendors stock.

A:  This is not specifically addressed in any policies.

The market regulations refer to the use of a stall on the market not being permitted for the sale of animals but not fur. 

At the application stage for pitches at events stallholders are advised that no real fur is permitted to be exhibited or sold and are asked to provide a list of all items to be sold with their application.

A:  If someone approached us asking to sell real fur products then we wouldn’t allow it, though I expect that some people who sell things such as bobble hats may be selling products with fur trim.

Ringwood Town Council has the following markets:

Ringwood Town Council does not own or manage any markets or fairs directly (Ringwood’s historic Wednesday market is the subject of a Charter that is in private ownership). The Council manages Gateway Square and licences monthly Antiques and Decorative Arts Fairs there. These are managed privately under licence from this Council. The Licence makes no provision about the inclusion of animal fur in items offered for sale at these. The Council organizes a bonfire and firework display and a Christmas event every year and these include stalls. There is no policy concerning the inclusion of animal fur in items offered for sale at these. Other events that may include stalls are organized on an occasional basis. Again, there is no policy concerning the inclusion of animal fur in items offered for sale at these.

A:  In theory, yes (whether any do so in practice, I cannot say).

A:  The Council licence Market Operators and Street Traders.  Currently there is no condition in their licence that prohibits the sale of real fur items.

Q: Do you allow stall holders at your markets to sell real fur? (including small items such as knitted hats with fur bobbles, or key rings with fur trims etc.

A:   No stall holders have been licenced to sell real fur

However, when we asked for clarification:

Could you please clarify, if real fur was found on a trading stall would the trader be required to remove it?  I ask because most real fur found on markets is as trims e.g. the pom pom on a knitted hat.  The trader would list knitted hats or accessories on their application, not knitted hat with real fur trim.

The response we received was:
