A: The Council does not have a policy as such but this is Southern Market Traders Policy:
SMT POLICY FOR PROHIBITED PRODUCTS
- Ivory: In response to the already strict regulations inflicted on the sale of ivory products and the growing cause for a total UK ban, SMT does not permit the sale of any ivory products, or items with ivory in them on any of our markets.
- Rhino Horn: SMT does not permit the sale of any rhino horn nor associated products, on any of our markets.
- Animal Fur: SMT does not permit the sale of any fashion item made in whole or in part from real animal fur on any of our markets.
- Drugs and Tobacco Products: SMT does not permit the sale of any illegal drugs nor tobacco products, on any of our markets.
- Fake Designer Labels: SMT does not permit the sale of any products with fake designer labels on any of our markets.
- Knives and other Weapons: SMT does not permit the sale of knives nor other weapons nor reproduction items, that could be used for criminal activity.
- Offensive Design/Slogans: Traders will be instructed to remove from sale with immediate effect, any item with offensive or inappropriate slogan or design.
We reserve the right to refuse or ask a trader to remove any items we feel do not comply with our policy.
The Council have asked to received our Fur Free Markets scheme information with a view to developing a cohesive poliy.
We are contacting both SMT and France at Home to invite them to join the Fur Free Markets scheme (Italia in Piazza is food only)

A: We do not permit any stall holders to sell real fur. All traders at our events are subject to an application process through our Environmental Health teams which requires the operators to list the products they intend to sell. Markets are then inspected by both Environmental Health and Trading Standards officers before and during selling to ensure that vendors are compliant at all times.

A: We do not knowingly encourage the sale of goods containing real fur, however, it is impossible to inspect every single product line on offer. There is currently nothing within the market regulations to prevent the sale of these items. There is, however, a blanket ban on the sale of any animals.
The Council does not prohibit the sale of fur. They have asked to see our Fur Free Markets policy to consider.
Real fur is cruel and unnecessary. June 2018 – we have received an update from the Mayors Office:
the Council does not have a specific policy with regards to the sale of fur at our markets. However, we actively discourage the sale of fur and refuse permission if asked. A: NO
Market officers patrol the market throughout opening hours, however, we are very much reliant on feedback from customers to assist us in identifying real fur. In the event of a complaint being received we will investigate, including taking the appropriate professional advice.
In terms of enforcement, if a concern is identified then we will speak with the trader to ensure that they understand the issue and ask them to refrain from selling the offending item. If the trader refuses to cooperate then there is a clause in our trading agreements that a trader must not bring the council into disrepute which can be enforced.
