A: Lincoln Christmas Market does not have any stalls that sell real fur but would be happy to consider your wording

The application form for the Christmas Market now includes the following clause:
Please be aware that we do not allow the sale of real fur at Lincoln Christmas Market. Real fur means any animal skin or part attached thereto, either in its raw or processed state or the pelt of any animal killed for the animal’s fur. Real fur does not include materials clipped, shorn or combed from animals, fleece, sheepskin or shearling. We allow the sale of leather only where this is produced as by-product of the meat industry. They have also confirmed they do not allow the sale of fur on the Central Market
The Council have asked to see our Fur Free Markets policy to consider.

POLICY STATEMENT
Matlock Town Council recognises that the United Kingdom has banned the farming of animals for their fur on ethical grounds since 2000 and the use of one of the most common traps used to catch animals for their fur has also been banned for many years.
Recognising that real fur is cruel and unnecessary, this Local Authority prohibits the selling of products containing real animal fur on council owned land, council run markets or council leased markets (including seasonal and Christmas markets). All products wholly or partially made with real fur are covered by this ban.
Further to this, the Council will not use real fur on robes and other items relating to Council office garments.
They adopted the main body of the policy but not the full wording and unfortunately they declined to join the Fur Free Markets Scheme.

Here is Ely Market’s (run on behalf on the council) position on fur:
We do NOT allow real fur to be sold on any of our markets or events throughout the year. We have had to enforce this in the past when we became aware that a trader was selling real fur pom pom hats imported from China.

LSD Promotions are contracted to run all Stratford-upon-Avon Town Centre Markets. LSD Promotions have a strict No Fur policy and are members of our Fur Free Markets Scheme.

A: The decision on the stock of anyone selling on the markets through our contract would be made by LSD Promotions. If the council chose to it could put a clause in our markets contract, but there currently isn’t one.
Although this means Fur is not currently sold at this councils markets we have contacted the council to invite them to sign up to our Fur Free Markets Scheme.

CJ’s Events Warwickshire is currently reviewing its policies. We’re pleased to have been approached by Respect For Animals to join the Fur Free Markets Scheme. Here at CJ’s Events Warwickshire we realise real fur is cruel and unnecessary. Although we encourage small independent businesses to sell exclusive products, we do not feel fur has a place at our markets or events and will work closely with traders to ensure no fur products are sold.

A: We do not currently have an animal welfare charter or a policy that covers the sale of real fur products on our markets.
We would like to review this in the near future and would therefore be pleased to receive some information on suitable wording that could potentially be used to cover this.
In may 2018 we received this update:
I can confirm that our Markets Code of Practice for Traders has been updated to state that traders are not allowed to sell any real fur based products on our regular weekly markets in the District.
They have been invited to join the Fur Free Markets scheme but have not yet responded.

However, we would not restrict a trader in selling fur related products as this is not prohibited in our market charter. We have the right, as owner of the land/building, under the Market charter to restrict any goods being sold that is offensive to public taste. That being said this would not directly be instigated providing the fur products remained legal to be sold in the UK.

A: The DRAFT Trader handbook contains the following clause:
11.1 You must not sell stolen goods, counterfeit goods, unsafe goods, tobacco products (duty unpaid), unauthorised alcohol goods, offensive weapons, fireworks, legal highs, real fur, livestock and items of a pornographic or offensive nature. Any concerns or suspected breaches of this paragraph will be reported to Nottinghamshire Police and/or Trading Standards whichever is the most appropriate authority.
