Here is the Council’s response to our Freedom of Information request:
Q: Do you allow stall holders at your markets to sell real fur? (including small items such as knitted hats with fur bobbles, or key rings with fur trims etc.
A: The Council has received the following statement from Market Place Europe who runs the markets on festive days at Harrow Town Centre:
We do allow the sale of sheepskin products and also at Christmas we allow our trader from Lapland to sell Reindeer hide. This is herded and grazed just as we do with sheep. However we do not have the Lappish trader attending Harrow. We do not permit any other sales of animal hide or fur.
We did not receive any information regarding any of the other operators.
The Council allows the sale of fur. They have asked to see our Fur Free Markets policy to consider.
Real fur is cruel and unnecessary. Please urge the Council to ban the sale of real fur on their markets and adopt the official Fur Free Markets policy by contacting Councilor Keith Ferry, Business, Planning & Regeneration, email: keith.ferry@harrow.gov.uk
