Q: Do you allow stall holders at your markets to sell real fur? (including small items such as knitted hats with fur bobbles, or key rings with fur trims etc.

A:   We have no policy surrounding this and to our knowledge none of the stall holders currently sell fur

A:   WE CURRENTLY HAVE NO POLICY AS NO TRADERS SELL THESE PRODUCTS

Dacorum Borough Council has the following markets:

Dacorum Borough Council manage two markets, the management of which is contracted out to Saunders Markets Limited.

• Hemel Hempstead Town Centre – weekly markets held on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
• Hemel Hempstead Old Town Market – monthly market on the first Sunday of the month (excluding January & February)

We also organise two large annual events in Hemel Hempstead where a small number of trading stalls (predominantly food vendors) are permitted:-

• Old Town Halloween Party
• Christmas Live @ Hemel Hempstead

A: I have checked with our market operator and there have been no instances of any traders selling fur to date to their knowledge.  At present as long as traders are operating within the law they are permitted to trade.  Saunders Markets do not currently have a policy around fur but have asked to be made aware of information that is sent to us in respect of the same.

A:  we do not currently have a policy within our market contract that fur should not be sold and as far as we are aware the situation has not arisen.

Luton Borough Council has the following markets: Luton Borough Council do not currently manage any markets. The Luton Market is operated by Town and Country Markets. Generally any fairs or festivals would be managed by Luton Culture and street trading / occasional street trading consents issued within the relevant consent area would be dealt with by Luton Borough Council Licensing Service.

A:   Currently no street trading consent holders are authorised to sell real fur. However at present there are no specific conditions listed on the consents preventing the sale if permission was to be issued.

A: I have asked TCM whether they have a policy in place and they have said they do not have a policy as such. None of the traders at New Watford Market are currently selling fur products according to TCM.

We would be happy to review any Animal Welfare Charters and policy wording you could provide. Although no fur is being sold at New Watford Market, TCM have said they would welcome any suggestion for policy wording or stall holder agreement wording.

A: The Council has received the following statement from Market Place Europe who runs the markets on festive days at Harrow Town Centre:

We do allow the sale of sheepskin products and also at Christmas we allow our trader from Lapland to sell Reindeer hide. This is herded and grazed just as we do with sheep. However we do not have the Lappish trader attending Harrow. We do not permit any other sales of animal hide or fur.

We did not receive any information regarding any of the other operators.

A:  This is not specifically addressed in any policies.

The market regulations refer to the use of a stall on the market not being permitted for the sale of animals but not fur. 

At the application stage for pitches at events stallholders are advised that no real fur is permitted to be exhibited or sold and are asked to provide a list of all items to be sold with their application.
