A:  We don’t have a charter but the contract with market operators includes a provision: …The list of prohibited items is not exhaustive and Council reserves the right to prohibit the sale of goods if it deems it appropriate.

The Council allows the sale of fur, but will consider a Fur Free Market policy.

A: I can only comment for Alfreton Indoor Market and the Council do not currently have a policy in place for this type of product so there would not be any restrictions – although we have not been approached by any trader selling these items. The Council would be happy to receive a recommended form of words to include in policy documents and stallholder agreements.

A: Stallholders are not currently prohibited from selling items that may include real fur and we could gladly receive recommended wording to include in future policy documents, which we are currently revising, and stallholder agreements.

A:   It has never been accommodated on the market but we have also never been approached to allow it. We can only refuse  goods on specific grounds in reference to our Street Trading conditions and the appropriate legislation.

A: There is no specific exclusion of the sale of fur, although we do not have any traders who have sought to sell such items.

Ceredigion County Council has the following markets: Aberystwyth farmer’s market, annual food festival and annual Sea 2 Shore Festival, annual winter fairs in Cardigan and Aberystwyth. The council owns Aberystwyth and Cardigan market halls.

A:  I can confirm that we do not currently have any stall holders selling anything made from real animal fur.  A huge part of our customer base is made up of shoppers on a budget, so I am unsure if this would be a suitable product for the market, based on this factor alone.

 

The Council does not prohibit the sale of fur. It is worrying that the Council does not seem to realise that the majority of real fur on sale at markets is very cheap, often as cheap as fake fur, and imported from places like China where animal welfare is virtually non-existent.

They have, though, asked to see our Fur Free Markets policy to consider.

My view on this subject is that the English law is the right vehicle to limit this sort of sale rather than by different local authorities taking their own route. I encourage you to pursue this issue via Members of Parliament.
