Here is University of Salford’s response to our Freedom of Information request:
Q: Does your HE establishment have a policy on the use of fur?
A: The University does not have a policy on the use of fur.
Q: Does real fur feature in any of your fashion or design courses, and if so, in what way?
A: Students have the creative freedom to source their own fabrics and are informed on the practices within the industry in the modules. There are no course documents that specifically relate to fur.
Q: What financial support, including sponsored competitions do you receive from the fur industry?
A: The University does not receive financial support from the fur industry.
Q: Does your HE establishment allow or facilitate the fur industry to promote design competitions, summer schools, sponsorships, internships, or scholarships?
A: The University works with GH Leathers – a fur and leather supplier who present to students about their processes and the items they use which are bi products of the meat industry.
This university actively engages with the fur industry.
Real fur is cruel and unnecessary. Please urge the University to remove fur from its courses, cease engaging with the fur trade, and adopt a fur free policy. Email: Allan Walker, Dean of School, a.j.walker1@salford.ac.uk
