Fur debate in Parliament: ask your MP to attend

In March, a petition on the parliamentary petition website calling for a ban on the sale of real fur in the UK passed 100,000 signatures, meaning that the issue had to be considered for debate in Parliament. The petition was started by two fantastic anti-fur activists, Catherine and Diane, and, thanks to their efforts, we now have an official date. The debate will be held at Westminster Hall on Monday 4th June at 4:30pm.

Thank you all for signing the petition that got us to this stage. But we need your help once again.

Please write to your MP and urge them to attend the debate on Monday 4th June.

The fur industry are desperately lobbying MPs in a bid to protect their bloody trade, so we need our many grassroots supporters like you to help us expose their propaganda.

It’s time to make fur history in the UK:

  • We’ve banned fur farming and the most commonly used fur trap for their cruelty, so it is illogical and hypocritical to continue to import fur from these sources;
  • ALL imported fur comes from animals kept in tiny cages or barbaric traps, the science is clear on this;
  • Opinion polling shows that the overwhelming majority of British people support a ban on real fur;
  • Fur bans are proving effective and successful in a number of areas (San Francisco, West Hollywood, Berkeley) and fashion’s biggest names are ditching fur (Gucci, Armani, Michael Kors, Versace).

Please contact your MP to:

• ask them to attend the debate on 4th June to show their support for a ban on the import and sale of real fur products in the UK;

• ask them to speak in the debate so that the government can hear the strength of feeling among MPs from all political parties;

• let them know that a briefing will be circulated to MPs ahead of the debate by Respect for Animals.

Check who your MP is and write to them here

Here is a template letter for you to copy and paste (feel free to add your own words and thoughts, this often makes your letter even more effective):

Dear [name of your MP]

As a constituent of yours, I urge you to attend the debate on banning real fur, at 4:30 pm in Westminster Hall on 4th June. I am a supporter of the e-petition on the parliament website titled ‘Ban The Sale Of Animal Fur In The UK’, https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/200888. That e-petition received well over 100,000 signatures, triggering this important debate.

It is time to make fur history in the UK:

  • We’ve banned fur farming and the fur trap most commonly used due to their cruelty, so it is illogical and hypocritical to continue to import fur from these sources;
  • ALL imported fur comes from animals kept in tiny cages or barbaric traps, the science is clear on the inherently low welfare standards caused by this;
  • Opinion polling shows that the overwhelming majority of British people support a ban on real fur;
  • Fur bans are proving effective and successful in a number of areas (San Francisco, West Hollywood, Berkeley) and fashion’s biggest names are ditching fur (Gucci, Armani, Michael Kors, Versace).

I hope that, as well as attending the debate, you will argue for the ending of this barbaric fur trade in the UK.

Also, I would like to make you aware that anti-fur organisation Respect for Animals will be providing all Members of Parliament with a briefing ahead of the debate. Respect for Animals will be able to deal with any further questions you might have.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely
