A private members’ bill to end the import and sale of real fur in Britain has been introduced to Parliament by Ruth Jones, Labour MP for Newport West and Islwyn.
The bill would extend current trade bans on cat, dogs and seal fur to other species, including mink, foxes, raccoon dogs, chinchillas, coyotes and more.
Update: The crucial second reading of the bill will take place on Friday 13 June 2025.
The UK because the first country in the world to ban fur farming in 2000, after a campaign led by Respect for Animals. That legislation started as a private member’s bill like this one, promoted at the time by Maria Eagle MP.
Mark Glover of Respect for Animals, who was the leading campaigner taking the original fur farming legislation through Parliament, said:
By banning the import of cruel fur products, Britain will no longer contribute to the pain and torment inflicted on animals by the fur trade. Thank you to Ruth Jones MP for taking on this issue. We will be using our experience of successful fur legislation to do everything to ensure this bill succeeds. Fur is cruel and the British people want it banned.
