Q: Do you allow stall holders at your markets to sell real fur? (including small items such as knitted hats with fur bobbles, or key rings with fur trims etc.
A: The Town Council has adopted your policy wording. It can be found on our website under Council Document Library>policies and procedures.
POLICY STATEMENT
Matlock Town Council recognises that the United Kingdom has banned the farming of animals for their fur on ethical grounds since 2000 and the use of one of the most common traps used to catch animals for their fur has also been banned for many years.
Recognising that real fur is cruel and unnecessary, this Local Authority prohibits the selling of products containing real animal fur on council owned land, council run markets or council leased markets (including seasonal and Christmas markets). All products wholly or partially made with real fur are covered by this ban.
Further to this, the Council will not use real fur on robes and other items relating to Council office garments.
They adopted the main body of the policy but not the full wording and unfortunately they declined to join the Fur Free Markets Scheme.

Here is Ely Market’s (run on behalf on the council) position on fur:
We do NOT allow real fur to be sold on any of our markets or events throughout the year. We have had to enforce this in the past when we became aware that a trader was selling real fur pom pom hats imported from China.

Worcester City Council has the following markets: Angel Place, ‘Upmarkets’, Riverside Artists Market, Worcester Victorian Christmas Fayre and various festivals and fun days
All the main markets, the Christmas Fayre and some festivals are managed by LSD Promotions who have a strict No Fur policy and are members of our Fur Free Markets Scheme.

A: ‘No’
We are seeking clarification from Worcester Council as to their policy for events not managed by LSD Promotions.

Derry City and Strabane District Council has the following markets: Walled City Market, held on the first Saturday of the month in the Guildhall Square Derry and the Strabane Market, held on the last Friday of the month in the Alley Theatre courtyard.
They also have traders for council’s larger events such as Halloween, Christmas, Jazz Festival and Summer Jamm.

A: The following clause has been added to the T&C’s:

Recognising that real fur is cruel and unnecessary, this Local Authority prohibits the selling of products containing real animal fur on council run markets (including seasonal and Christmas markets). All products wholly or partially made with real fur are covered by this ban and includes for example; fur coats, vintage fur, fur shawls, garments with fur trim, fur pompom hats, and fur accessories and trinkets.
They have also stated:
I wish to confirm that animal fur is not used on any of the Council’s Civic Regalia (ie) Mayor’s/Councillor/Aldermen robes. The robes are made from man-made synthetic fibres.

Lincoln City Council has the following markets: Lincoln Central Market &Lincoln Christmas Market

A: Lincoln Christmas Market does not have any stalls that sell real fur but would be happy to consider your wording
They have now provided an update:
The application form for the Christmas Market now includes the following clause:
Please be aware that we do not allow the sale of real fur at Lincoln Christmas Market. Real fur means any animal skin or part attached thereto, either in its raw or processed state or the pelt of any animal killed for the animal’s fur. Real fur does not include materials clipped, shorn or combed from animals, fleece, sheepskin or shearling. We allow the sale of leather only where this is produced as by-product of the meat industry. They have also confirmed they do not allow the sale of fur on the Central Market
The Council have asked to see our Fur Free Markets policy to consider.

Stratford-upon-Avon District Council has the following markets: Rother Street Markets, Waterside Upmarket, Victorian Christmas Market, Various occasional specialist markets.
LSD Promotions are contracted to run all Stratford-upon-Avon Town Centre Markets. LSD Promotions have a strict No Fur policy and are members of our Fur Free Markets Scheme.

A: The decision on the stock of anyone selling on the markets through our contract would be made by LSD Promotions. If the council chose to it could put a clause in our markets contract, but there currently isn’t one.
Although this means Fur is not currently sold at this councils markets we have contacted the council to invite them to sign up to our Fur Free Markets Scheme.

SMT POLICY FOR PROHIBITED PRODUCTS
- Ivory: In response to the already strict regulations inflicted on the sale of ivory products and the growing cause for a total UK ban, SMT does not permit the sale of any ivory products, or items with ivory in them on any of our markets.
- Rhino Horn: SMT does not permit the sale of any rhino horn nor associated products, on any of our markets.
- Animal Fur: SMT does not permit the sale of any fashion item made in whole or in part from real animal fur on any of our markets.
- Drugs and Tobacco Products: SMT does not permit the sale of any illegal drugs nor tobacco products, on any of our markets.
- Fake Designer Labels: SMT does not permit the sale of any products with fake designer labels on any of our markets.
- Knives and other Weapons: SMT does not permit the sale of knives nor other weapons nor reproduction items, that could be used for criminal activity.
- Offensive Design/Slogans: Traders will be instructed to remove from sale with immediate effect, any item with offensive or inappropriate slogan or design.
We reserve the right to refuse or ask a trader to remove any items we feel do not comply with our policy.
We congratulate SMT on their ethical stance and have invited them to join the official Fur Free Markets scheme.
