Hythe and Dibden Parish Council

Hythe and Dibden Parish Council has the following markets: Tuesday market operated by Southern Market Traders,  French Market by France at Home (twice yearly), Italian market by Italia in Piazza (twice yearly), and some occasional markets again organised by Southern Market Traders.

Here is the Council’s response to our Freedom of Information request:

Q: Do you allow stall holders at your markets to sell real fur? (including small items such as knitted hats with fur bobbles, or key rings with fur trims etc.

A: The Council does not have a policy as such but this is Southern Market Traders Policy:

SMT POLICY FOR PROHIBITED PRODUCTS

  1. Ivory: In response to the already strict regulations inflicted on the sale of ivory products and the growing cause for a total UK ban, SMT does not permit the sale of any ivory products, or items with ivory in them on any of our markets.
  2. Rhino Horn: SMT does not permit the sale of any rhino horn nor associated products, on any of our markets.
  3. Animal Fur: SMT does not permit the sale of any fashion item made in whole or in part from real animal fur on any of our markets.
  4. Drugs and Tobacco Products: SMT does not permit the sale of any illegal drugs nor tobacco products, on any of our markets.
  5. Fake Designer Labels: SMT does not permit the sale of any products with fake designer labels on any of our markets.
  6. Knives and other Weapons: SMT does not permit the sale of knives nor other weapons nor reproduction items, that could be used for criminal activity.
  7. Offensive Design/Slogans: Traders will be instructed to remove from sale with immediate effect, any item with offensive or inappropriate slogan or design.

We reserve the right to refuse or ask a trader to remove any items we feel do not comply with our policy.

The Council have asked to received our Fur Free Markets scheme information with a view to developing a cohesive poliy.

We are contacting both SMT and France at Home to invite them to join the Fur Free Markets scheme (Italia in Piazza is food only)
