A: I can confirm that we do not currently have any stall holders selling anything made from real animal fur. A huge part of our customer base is made up of shoppers on a budget, so I am unsure if this would be a suitable product for the market, based on this factor alone.
The Council does not prohibit the sale of fur. It is worrying that the Council does not seem to realise that the majority of real fur on sale at markets is very cheap, often as cheap as fake fur, and imported from places like China where animal welfare is virtually non-existent.

POLICY STATEMENT
Matlock Town Council recognises that the United Kingdom has banned the farming of animals for their fur on ethical grounds since 2000 and the use of one of the most common traps used to catch animals for their fur has also been banned for many years.
Recognising that real fur is cruel and unnecessary, this Local Authority prohibits the selling of products containing real animal fur on council owned land, council run markets or council leased markets (including seasonal and Christmas markets). All products wholly or partially made with real fur are covered by this ban.
Further to this, the Council will not use real fur on robes and other items relating to Council office garments.
They adopted the main body of the policy but not the full wording and unfortunately they declined to join the Fur Free Markets Scheme.

Q: Do you allow stall holders at your markets to sell real fur? (including small items such as knitted hats with fur bobbles, or key rings with fur trims etc.
A: There are no specific restrictions on the sale of fur within the lease with Gilstream but happy to discuss their approach with them as we meet on a regular basis.
The Council allows the sale of fur. They have asked to see our Fur Free Markets policy to consider.
Real fur is cruel and unnecessary. Please urge the Council to ban the sale of real fur on their markets and adopt the official Fur Free Markets policy by contacting Mal Sheldon, Chair of Place Committee, email: msheldon@melton.gov.uk

A: Not to our knowledge
However, we are unaware of any official policy documents or guidelines to enforce this.

This council has advised us that they have no responsibility for trading stalls at markets or other events.

A: We have no policy regarding fur sale, but we are not aware of any stall that sells fur.

Rushcliffe Borough Council has the following markets: Bingham market, Bingham farmers’ market, Sutton Bonington farmers market, West Bridgford farmers’ market, West Bridgford and Bingham craft market (management of all markets is contracted out).
