Here is the Council’s response to our Freedom of Information request:
Q: Do you allow stall holders at your markets to sell real fur? (including small items such as knitted hats with fur bobbles, or key rings with fur trims etc.
A: Manchester City Council has added the following clause to it’s trader agreements for its Christmas Market ONLY.
Clause 10.FUR
-
- Manchester Markets will not permit any real fur products to be sold on our markets from 2019.
on 16/10/19 they stated:
There is nothing specific within the trading agreements for other markets as the Council has no specific policy in relation to animal fur products. However, checks were undertaken yesterday and there are currently no traders selling animal fur products on any of our markets.
The Council allows the sale of fur. They have asked to see our Fur Free Markets policy to consider.
Real fur is cruel and unnecessary. Please urge the Council to ban the sale of real fur on their markets and adopt the official Fur Free Markets policy by contacting Matthew Bennett, Head of Commissioning and Delivery, email: m.bennett1@manchester.gov.uk or Councillor Luthfur Rahman, Executive Member for Skills, Culture and Leisure, email: cllr.l.rahman@manchester.gov.uk
