A:  

The issues to which you refer thankfully are not problems that we have experienced within this District. We however do recognise that this may have caused a problem in other areas and that we may at some point find the sale of real fur within markets. We do have control over what items are sold on markets, however we could consider this issue specifically with Members.

I would be very grateful if you can send me the information you have relating to these issues and I will explore this and ask our members if they wish to address the issue through policy when it is reviewed.

A:  The Council reserves the right to refuse to allow for sale any class of goods deemed illegal or unsuitable for sale on the markets and currently specifies in the market policy  ‘counterfeit products; weapons; alcohol; tobacco, and any other product/service deemed inappropriate’. While we do not currently specify animal fur, our markets are under review and any information provided would be considered as part of this review.

A:  We don’t have a clause in our current market terms and conditions relating to fur. I’m fairly certain we don’t currently have any fur being sold on any of our markets, however I can’t see why we wouldn’t add such a clause to ban fur. I’m happy for you to circulate policy wording for us to look at.

A:  I can confirm that we do not currently have any stall holders selling anything made from real animal fur.  A huge part of our customer base is made up of shoppers on a budget, so I am unsure if this would be a suitable product for the market, based on this factor alone.

 

The Council does not prohibit the sale of fur. It is worrying that the Council does not seem to realise that the majority of real fur on sale at markets is very cheap, often as cheap as fake fur, and imported from places like China where animal welfare is virtually non-existent.

They have, though, asked to see our Fur Free Markets policy to consider.

My view on this subject is that the English law is the right vehicle to limit this sort of sale rather than by different local authorities taking their own route. I encourage you to pursue this issue via Members of Parliament.

A:   Ipswich Market:
Only approved goods which are listed in the Market Regulations are allowed to be sold on the market. Real fur goods are not on this list.
Other occasional markets:
The Council is not aware of any traders selling real fur products at the occasional markets, however this is not something which is specifically asked.

A: Yes – there are no restrictions in our terms and conditions on the sale of real fur. We stipulate that all goods sold must comply with all sale of goods legislation. This would indicate that fur goods approved for import and sale by UK government can be sold.
