Watford Borough Council has the following markets: New Watford Market – managed by Town & Country Markets (TCM) Ltd.
Here is the Council’s response to our Freedom of Information request:
Q: Do you allow stall holders at your markets to sell real fur? (including small items such as knitted hats with fur bobbles, or key rings with fur trims etc.
A: I have asked TCM whether they have a policy in place and they have said they do not have a policy as such. None of the traders at New Watford Market are currently selling fur products according to TCM.
We would be happy to review any Animal Welfare Charters and policy wording you could provide. Although no fur is being sold at New Watford Market, TCM have said they would welcome any suggestion for policy wording or stall holder agreement wording.
The Council allows the sale of fur. They have asked to see our Fur Free Markets policy to consider.
Real fur is cruel and unnecessary. Please urge the Council to ban the sale of real fur on their markets and adopt the official Fur Free Markets policy by contacting Cllr Iain Sharpe, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Development, email: iain.sharpe@watford.gov.uk
